Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy (sometimes called ligament reconstruction therapy) is a treatment for laxity and chronic pain around the joints that stimulates the growth and re-growth of ligament tissue when connected to ligament sites.

A concentrated sugar (dextrose) and local anesthetic are injected into the joints, tendons, bursae, and ligaments of the neck, back, or extremities creating a controlled localized inflammatory response. This response triggers an increase in the number of cells that synthesize connective tissue, also known as fibroblasts. These fibroblasts then lay down new collagen tissue which stimulates the tissue to repair itself by shortening, thickening, and strengthening ligaments, thereby relieving discomfort and pain.

Prolotherapy has been developed for the treatment of chronic pain due to ligament instability and resulting joint, muscle, nerve and structural dysfunctions.  Conditions which may benefit from prolotherapy are:

  • Arthritis Pain
  • Low Back Pain
  • Leg pain
  • Herniated Discs
  • Sciatica
  • Hip, knee, ankle and foot pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Wrist, elbow and shoulder pain
  • Headaches
  • TMJ (jaw) pain
  • Post Injury/Trauma Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sports Injuries
  • Loose Joints
  • Tendonitis
  • Post fracture treatment
  • Whiplash
