Healthy Breasts for Life

Here at A New Leaf Naturopathic Clinic, we believe it is vital for every woman and man to be aware of their breast health.  It has been estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. 10% of breast cancer occurs in men, a statistic that is often overlooked.  We practice proactive prevention and believe it is the best medicine to change these odds for you.  Here are some steps you can take to ensure that you breasts stay healthy and happy throughout your life.

One of the most important factors in monitoring your breast health is your ratio of “good” and “bad” estrogens.  When estrogens are metabolized in your liver, they are either converted to 2-estriole (good estrogen) or 16-estriole (bad estrogen).  People with a higher ratio of bad estrogen are at an increased risk of developing breast or other hormone-related cancers.  Our clinic offers a simple urine test to determine this ratio for you.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

Bad estrogens can be found in things like plastic, pesticides, and non-organic meats.  You can prevent the accumulation of bad estrogens in your body by choosing organic foods and switching plastic bottles and containers for glass or stainless steel.

Certain foods contain nutrients that help your body to maintain a healthy estrogen balance.  Cruciferous foods such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and brussel sprouts all contain these nutrients in high concentrations.  Including them in your diet regularly is a great way to help keep your hormone levels in balance.

A monthly breast self exam is especially important for women.  If you are unsure of the procedure or have never performed a breast self exam before, we can show you how.  For more information or for a personalized prevention plan, contact us at here at the clinic.  We are here to help you take charge of your breast health.
