The unit will also supply naloxone kits, basic wound care, and assistance with social support resources for housing, finances, employment, health cards, and dental/eye care.

Scientists Tracking Our Health Trends

What’s Happening – Tracking Health Trends👩🏼‍💻

A new machine learning tool, developed by University of Alberta Computing Scientists, sifts through millions of #Twitter posts to understand health and wellness trends across #Canada. “We use machine learning to determine the location tweets refer to, the dimension of health they are related to, and the emotions expressed in each tweet,” explains U of A Computing Scientist, Osmar Zaiane. By tracking health trends, scientists can get a better understanding of what it’s actually like to live in a particular place, in terms of health and wellness.

The Plant-Based Food Craze Continues!

White Spot is set to join the plant-based food craze with their new “Beyond Burger” patty! 🍔

On Monday, April 15, the restaurant debuted the Beyond Burger patty, offering vegetarian and vegan customers a fully plant-based vehicle for its Triple O sauce, which is, of course, the real star of any burger on the White Spot menu. It tastes like the mayonnaise they serve in heaven. It should be noted that mayo disqualifies the Beyond Burger as vegan. But we digress.

Available at all full-service White Spot restaurants in B.C. and Alberta, the four-ounce, chargrilled veggie patty, made with pea protein, can be added to any burger in place of a beef patty! 🌱 But if you’re the sort that hates to request menu substitutions, the Beyond Burger patty will be featured in the new Avocado Beyond Burger, which also comes topped with fresh avocado, pickled onions, roasted corn, crisp lettuce, vine-ripened tomatoes, jalapeño ranch and edamame hummus. Yum! 😋

If your beauty sleep is in need of a serious overhaul, we’ve compiled a list of the best essential oils to catch up on some extra Z’s. Not only do essential oils promote a restful sleep, they can also diminish anxiety, relieve stress, and provide a sense of relaxation. Our favourite way to utilize essential oils is through a diffuser. We’ve included a link to Saje’s diffuser, or a more affordable option from Amazon.

We recommend Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Cedarwood, Chamomile, and Marjoram. These essential oils can be found at your local health food store, at Saje Natural Wellness, or even online through Amazon.

Lavender is well-known for its calming effects on the body and is safe to use on all-ages. It’s also a great way to freshen up your laundry. Ylang Ylang helps balance male and female energies, supports focus, and restores peace within. Cedarwood supports healthy function of the pineal gland which releases melatonin, the body’s natural sleep hormone. Chamomile is perfect for restlessness and anxious feelings, and has been used for centuries by mothers to help calm their children. Marjoram is extremely soothing and relaxes nerves. It’s been known as, “the herb of happiness.” Cheers to catching some extra Z’s and sleeping in!

What’s Trending – Kombucha

Kombucha is a mixture of bacteria, sugar, and fermented black or green tea. Kombucha is made by introducing a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) into brewed tea and sugar. This mixture is then left to ferment for anywhere between a week and a month. Fruit, herbs, and spices can be added for additional flavor. The tea dates back 2000 years to ancient China, where it was regularly consumed to remedy inflammatory ailments. Benefits of drinking kombucha include being a rich source of probiotics and antioxidants, can kill bacteria, and aids in better gut health. It is also full of Vitamin-B, which helps with energy and clarity. Local kombucha companies that we recommend trying out include Oddity Kombucha, August Market, O5 Rare Tea + Kombucha Bar, and local grocery stores including Whole Foods and Save On.
