The Benefits of Naturopathy: Improving Your Health Naturally

Naturopathic Medicine

Our Naturopathic doctors are trained to provide primary and integrative medicine to our patients. NDs treat the underlying cause of disease through the art and science of supporting the patient's natural healing processes and removing any obstacles to those processes when possible.

  • Naturopathic medicine is a primary care and complementary medicine that treats the underlying cause of disease; it is the art and science of supporting the patient's natural healing processes and removing any obstacles to those processes when possible. It is the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of physical, mental and emotional conditions, including acute and chronic conditions, and it is the promotion of well-being using therapeutics that primarily support or enhance a patient’s overall health. Naturopathic Physicians use a variety of natural remedies and techniques, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, botanical medicine, and lifestyle counselling, to help patients achieve optimal health through their traditional naturopathic practice. Learn more about the principles and practices of naturopathic medicine, including using natural substances, from experienced and knowledgeable naturopathic Physicians.

In BC, naturopathic doctors (NDs) are licensed to provide primary health care: Health care that emphasizes disease prevention by providing an individualized, patient-centred focus on healthy living, natural health products and therapies, diet, appropriate diagnostic testing and, when appropriate, integrating conventional medical care with complementary care.

  • Yes. Naturopathic physicians have been legislated in BC as primary care providers since 1923, first under an Act including MDs, 1936 under distinct self-regulating legislation.

  • Most patients find three major benefits to seeing an ND: primary care prevention-oriented medicine and valid complementary approaches when other treatments cause side effects or chronic diseases for which conventional medicine is ineffective.

We pride ourselves on taking the time to actively and compassionately listen to our patients and empower them with the tools and support they need to heal themselves.

Our Treatments

At A New Leaf, we offer several naturopathic treatments and services depending on your unique health needs and lifestyle.

  • Our clinic has a team of Naturopathic doctors trained to offer our patients primary and complementary medicine. These doctors focus on treating the root cause of the disease by supporting the patient's natural healing processes and removing any obstacles that may hinder the recovery process.

Our practitioners are committed to continuously learning and growing as naturopathic physicians. They work closely with patients and their existing medical team to identify the underlying causes of chronic diseases and resolve them. Our NDs also customize treatments to suit each patient’s unique lifestyle choices.

It is important to note that all naturopathic doctors at A New Leaf have prescription authority.

  • Acupuncture can be a great addition to any treatment plan. The needles are thin, flexible, and inserted into specific body areas to stimulate healing. Treatments can help reduce anxiety, reduce pain, and restore balance.

  • IV Therapy involves administering specific substances directly into the bloodstream through a vein close to the skin's surface. This method bypasses digestion, allowing medications or substances to enter the system directly. IV therapy is particularly useful for those who may have difficulty absorbing nutrients due to digestive issues or those who require immediate relief from symptoms. It can also be used to administer high doses of certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C or magnesium, which may not be achievable through oral supplementation. IV therapy has been shown to have numeroous benefits.e

  • Injection therapies allow the precise delivery of medicines directly to the tissues that need it. Injection appointments are typically 5-minute visits where vitamin injections are inserted into your deltoid or glute muscle for quick and effective absorption into the bloodstream.

  • Our clinic is proud to provide blood draws in-house – no more waiting in line at busy labs. We offer extensive testing through blood, saliva, breath, urine, and stool samples to see what’s happening in your body. This allows accurate diagnosis and monitoring of treatment success.

  • Cervical and chest exams are an important component of assigned female health care. Naturopathic doctors are trained to perform cervical and breast exams (including pap testing), and the BC Cancer Agency ensures that pap tests are free if you’ve had a bad experience in the past or are nervous about your pap tests, book with your ND for a more gentle, informative approach.

  • Diet is a foundational aspect of health. As naturopathic doctors, we are thoroughly trained in nutrition and can help you determine your nutrient requirements (including calories, vitamins, minerals, and macronutrient counts) to optimize your diet and performance, as well as discuss the pros and cons of a specific diet (think: ketogenic, paleo, vegan or vegetarian) for you and your health needs. We can also work with other healthcare advisors, such as dentists, who may use naturopathic methods in their treatment plans, including nutritional therapy and prescription drugs, to provide a comprehensive approach to your health and wellness.

  • We offer ElaProMed as a painless, non-invasive treatment of transdermal portion technology which delivers solutions directly into the dermis.

This treatment can target skin concerns such as acne and pigmentation, scalp concerns/Hair Growth, and pain management.

We also carry a great selection of Eminence Organics skincare products for purchase in our in-house dispensary.

  • Dr. Alison Vandekerkhove has additional certification in both Prolotherapy and Neural therapy for pain management.
